Stories from the Sovereign Grace Pastors Conference

The last week of October I had the joy of leading our annual Sovereign Grace Churches Pastors Conference. It’s my favorite conference because I get to be with people I love and respect so much, the pastors and wives of Sovereign Grace. You see, our time together is more like a family reunion than a conference. We sang God-glorifying songs together. We heard soul-strengthening preaching from John Piper, CJ Mahaney, Mickey Connolly, Jared Mellinger, Rick Gamache, and Jeff Purswell. We prayed for one another, and over a meal, or in times of Spirit-led ministry, we cared for one another.

During our time together, we also heard stories of God’s good activity in our family of churches. Because these stories were so edifying, I wanted you to hear a couple of them so that you can be encouraged by the work God is doing in Sovereign Grace.

The first story is from Joel Bain. Joel, his wife Samora, and their three children moved from Kingston, Jamaica to Louisville, KY in August to attend the Sovereign Grace Pastors College. Watch and listen as Joel describes how the Pastors College is equipping him, along with Sheldon Campbell, and Sean Taylor to hopefully return to Kingston and plant a Sovereign Grace church in the future.

The second story is from Jeff Boettcher. Jeff, his family, and people from four different Sovereign Grace churches planted Christ Church in South Philadelphia a little over two years ago. I think you’ll enjoy hearing how this church plant is already reaching their community with the gospel in a way that lives are being changed.

These are just two of the stories we got to hear at our Sovereign Grace Pastors Conference. They are encouraging because they not only remind us that we are a family of churches committed to advancing the gospel of Jesus Christ together, they also reveal God’s work in our churches. Therefore, the only right response is to say, “Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to your name give glory.” (Psalm 115:1a ESV)

Mark Prater is the Executive Director for Sovereign Grace and serves as an elder at Covenant Fellowship Church. He and his wife, Jill, have three married daughters and a growing number of grandchildren.
